Jorge's Story:
Jorge is a kind and caring 16-year-old sophomore at Borah High School, who has an intense love of video games and is who is adored by his precocious and energetic 4-year-old little sister. Always ready to meet you with a smile, one might never guess that over the last two years, Jorge has not been able to enjoy many aspects of being a teenager. On June 28, 2017, Jorge was diagnosed with metastatic osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and he has been fighting for his life ever since.

When Jorge was 14-years-old, he started experiencing deep pain in his right leg. The pain would cause him to limp, and eventually got so bad that he passed out at school. At the hospital, x-rays showed something was abnormal in his tibia bone. A specialist diagnosed Jorge with bone cancer, and he was admitted to St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital the very same day.

Jorge underwent surgery to install a port and immediately began two cycles of intense chemotherapy treatment to try and kill the tumor in his right tibia. Two months later, Jorge endured a limb salvage surgery, in which his entire right tibia and knee were replaced with titanium. After enduring ten months of chemo, Jorge went into remission. Unfortunately, this good news didn’t last for long.

After three months, the cancer returned…this time, in Jorge’s lungs. Jorge once again endured surgery, first in his right lung (June 2018) and then in his left lung (July 2018). A second period of remission followed, however it was very brief.

On October 22, 2018, Jorge relapsed for the second time. Doctors discovered a large tumor in Jorge’s chest wall between his ribs and diaphragm, along with more nodules in his lungs. Now fighting cancer for the third time, Jorge was placed on a new clinical trial, which came with difficult side effects. Unfortunately, a recent MRI showed new spots of osteosarcoma in Jorge’s chest, meaning the trial has failed.

Jorge will soon begin yet another chemo plan, continuing to fight for his life with everything he has. Through it all, Jorge remains a brave and courageous warrior, determined to keep fighting and unwilling to give up. Jorge is an inspiration to all who hear his story.

Jorge will be adopted as a Sparrow to a high school in Boise, ID. Boise area students will have the opportunity to work hard to raise money for Jorge’s ongoing treatment, through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
