Jakob's Story:Just as summer was coming to a close and Jakob was excited to start his senior year of high school, he started experiencing pain in his knee. After months of physical therapy, the pain only seemed to get worse. By October, the pain became so severe that he could no longer attend school regularly.
Finally on November 3, 2017, doctors did an MRI which showed signs of bone cancer. Jakob and his family were in shock as cancer never even entered their mind. Over the next three weeks Jakob endured more MRI’s, CT scans, nuclear medicine scans, x-rays and finally a painful bone biopsy. On November 22, Jakob’s worst nightmare came true. He was officially diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer.
Jakob’s tumor is located just above his knee and is quite large. Since this in an aggressive type of cancer, Jakob’s treatment started immediately and his cancer journey officially began. Within days of his diagnosis, a care team at OHSU worked diligently to put his treatment plan in place. Jakob’s treatment will be quite extensive and has only just begun. It involves 30 weeks of chemotherapy requiring him to stay in the hospital each time. In addition he is scheduled for surgery to remove the tumor, replace part of his femur and possibly his knee with a titanium implant.
Despite the confusion, sadness and pain that comes with this diagnosis, Jakob has shown great strength and strives to make those around him smile each day. He loves movies, drawing, comic books and gaming. Like most other high school students, he enjoys social media. Jakob has been an Outdoor School counselor and is determined to participate again.
Jakob needs our help. His family is strong but many added costs come with battling cancer.
Jakob will be adopted as a Sparrow to Tigard High School. Students will work hard to not only love and support him, but raise money for through sponsored community service and fundraising.
