When 8-year-old Holly began complaining about her ear continuing to hurt, her parents took her to the doctor, who diagnosed her with an ear infection. Holly was put on antibiotics, but after several days, it was clear they were not working. Shortly after, the right side of Holly’s face stopped working and the paralysis kept getting worse. Over the next few days, following a CT scan and an MRI, Holly and her family learned the reason for her ongoing ear pain. She did have an ear infection, but there was also something else…a tumor, located behind Holly’s eye socket, and by her sinuses and inner ear. This tumor was causing pain because it was pressing on her nerves and preventing fluid from draining.
After undergoing two biopsies (the tumor was accessed through Holly’s nose), Holly was officially diagnosed with a type of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma. Surgery was not a viable option, so Holly has been placed on an intensive 4-6 week daily radiation plan and a 43-week chemotherapy treatment plan.
Through all of this, Holly has been and continues to be a fighter with a lot of fire in her heart.
Holly is very active and loves sports, especially soccer and swimming. According to her father, Holly is mostly shy…until you get her outdoors and then you see that she has spunk!
It is this trait, among others, that has caused so many friends and people from the community to flock to her side as she fights. Her soccer team even named themselves “Holly’s Heroes” to show their support!
Holly will be adopted as a Sparrow to both Rachel Carson Middle School and Tigard High School. Students at Rachel Carson and Tigard High will work hard to make a difference in Holly’s life through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
