On August 23, 2017, just as summer was coming to a close and Erin was excited to start her freshman year of high school and kick off soccer season, her life took a dramatic turn when she found a strange lump on her neck. It didn’t hurt and seemed to appear overnight. Four days later, she was diagnosed with cancer.
A care team was immediately set up at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and over the next 3 weeks the doctors did everything they needed to do to confirm the diagnosis: needle biopsies, open biopsy surgery, x-rays, CT scans, a radioactive PET scan, pulmonary function tests, echocardiograms...and the list goes on. On September 19th she received the official diagnosis: Nodular Sclerosing Hodgkin Lymphoma, stage 2A. She had tumors in her neck and then a larger tumor in her chest. Erin’s chemotherapy started immediately and her cancer journey officially began.
Despite the confusion, sadness and pain that comes with this diagnosis, Erin has weathered the beginning of this storm with amazing grace, a positive attitude and an unyielding strength to overcome this cancer and not lose herself in the process. Always active in the community through sports, leadership groups, school activities and the Girl Scouts, Erin hopes to continue working with others to show how compassion can change people’s lives.
Erin needs our help. Her family is strong but many added costs come with battling cancer.
Erin said, “Cancer, you are going to wish you never messed with this girl! I am going to fight and I AM GOING TO WIN! There cannot be a rainbow without rain. I have my umbrella and rain boots ready. I will dance through this storm and smile again.”
Erin will be adopted as a Sparrow to Liberty High School. Students will work hard to not only love and support her, but raise money for Erin through sponsored community service and fundraising.
