Aleyna’s mom had a normal pregnancy and the ultrasound at 20 weeks showed everything was fine. The ultrasound at 37 weeks showed that her head was measuring the size of a baby at 29 weeks. (Most babies are born at 38 – 40 weeks.) Tests were run, and it was determined that Aleyna had Microcephaly, a rare neurological condition in which an infant's head is significantly smaller than the heads of other children of the same age.
When Aleyna was born she was in the NICU for 6 days. Many more tests were run. Things didn’t look good. She was having seizures and was also diagnosed with cerebral palsy. She was blind in her left eye. Doctors told her parents not to expect her to come home… but she did! She was wearing a heart monitor and had to take medicine twice a day, due to seizures, but with so much love and care she got stronger.
Aleyna turned a year-old in October 2017 and is beating the odds. She does regular physical therapy to help strengthen and control her muscles. It’s very slow progress to build up her muscles. Her doctors say if she can sit up on her own by age 2, there’s a good chance that she could walk.
Doctors said because of her condition Aleyna wouldn’t have any personality, but that’s not true at all. Certain songs and familiar voices make her happy. She coos and laughs for her family and close friends.
In spite of all her challenges, Aleyna is a happy little girl who smiles a lot… and keeps her family smiling.
Sparrow Cash raised for Aleyna will help with ongoing medical expenses, and everyday living expenses. Students at Seven Peaks School will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
