(10.25.10) The first year of life has been a tough one for little Reily. Born with multiple defects on the left side of his heart (diagnosed as Shone's Syndrome), Reily underwent open-heart surgery when he was just two weeks old, with the goal of fixing his pulmonary artery. This initial surgery failed to hold, resulting in another surgery to correct things in March of 2010. One aspect of Shone's Syndrome is that the associated heart problems get worse over time, making it very different from other types of congenital heart disease. Reily is unable to swallow well and cannot eat by mouth due to vocal chord damage, which occurred during surgery. Through his struggles, sweet Reily's story is touching lives of many people. One who adores Reily the most is his big sister, 2-year-old Hayden. Hayden is an intelligent, bright, and healthy little girl, who was born with visible cluster of blood vessels on her nose, called a hemangioma. Although this condition is considered cosmetic (and therefore not covered by insurance), it has made Hayden shy and self-conscious, as she knows something is different even at her young age. Thanks to the sponsorship of PremierWest Bank, both Reily and Hayden are McLoughlin Middle School's Sparrows for the 2010/2011 school year. Money raised by students for Reily and Hayden through community service and fundraising projects will help with living expenses related to the medical needs of Reily and if possible, will help pay for the surgery needed to remove the hemangioma from Hayden's nose.
