(6/4/07) 3 year old Matthew has already faced many challenges in life. At 6 weeks old his parents and doctor realized he was not growing like he was supposed to and he had stopped eating. The next week Matthew was diagnosed with severe G.E.R.D. (gastro esophageal reflux disease) as well as failure to thrive. The reflux was so bad that the acid from his stomach was burning his esophagus to the point that he wouldn't eat because of the pain. As a result, Matthew had to have a G-Tube inserted for feeding. Now at three years old, the reflux has subsided but there are deeper more serious issues that he and his family must deal with. Matthew is still afraid to eat because the pain caused by the G.E.R.D was so severe. As a result Matthew suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and an Anxiety Disorder. He is also in physical, occupation and speech therapy as he is developmentally delayed. Even though Matthew has had a difficult life, he is a brave and happy boy. Sparrow funds raised by Auburn High School will help pay for medical bills, therapy that's not covered by insurance and educational classes so his mom and dad can learn more about his condition and how to better care for him.
