Courtney's Story:
(05.13.09) At 17-years-old, Courtney is an intelligent and motivated high-school senior, determined to graduate this Spring. Her determination is especially inspiring given the fact that she was suddenly diagnosed with leukemia in December of 2008. It would be understandable for a person to grieve and be anxious about such a diagnosis, but Courtney's strong spirit was revealed when, upon hearing the news, she asked, "What do we do next to beat this thing?" Courtney is currently fighting cancer through regular intervals of chemotherapy, both in Portland as well as in Medford. She has also undergone four blood transfusions as well as three platelet transfusions. One of the hardest things for Courtney is having to take a break from sports and having to spend a lot of time indoors as she loves to do things outdoors. However, Courtney remains contagiously optimistic and is sticking to her plan of attending culinary school in the Fall. North Middle School has enthusiastically agreed to join Courtney in her fight against cancer by adopting her as their Sparrow in the few remaining weeks of school. Students will complete at least 256 hours of community service in order to raise money for Courtney and her family, (money already pledged by a sponsor) which will help offset the cost of medical expenses, transportation expenses, and will help with general living expenses. Central Oregon residents Jan and Jody Ward are generously providing the sponsorship for this project.
