Brandon's Story:
(3.2.10) Brandon was born in 2004 with a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. He has had three surgeries in the past 4 years to help correct his condition. With his body in a fragile state already, neither he nor his parents were prepared for the news they would receive next. It was August of 2009 when Brandon's problems began. His parents noticed that his stability was off and that he was having trouble walking in a straight line. Then he began to throw up for no reason at all. Brandon went in for his regular well child visit and his parents began asking questions. Because of his heart condition, the doctors thought that it may be related his most recent surgery, which had taken place in February that same year. On December 29th, 2009 Brandon received a cat scan in Redmond. That's when the phone call came. Brandon had a rare brain tumor, a cancer known as medulloblastema. Brandon and his parents made the trip to Portland the next day and immediately received an MRI. What the doctors saw was a tumor so large, they said that Brandon should not be alive. On January 4, 2010, Brandon underwent brain surgery to remove a baseball sized tumor at the base of his skull. Because of its size and placement, Brandon immediately lost all his motor skills function. He was alert but couldn't do or say anything. Since Brandon's surgery, he is slowing beginning to regain some of his skills. He has spent many days in the hospital just learning to walk, talk, and swallow food on his own again. He is still receiving doses of radiation once a day and will begin chemotherapy for 6 months after that. While Brandon's prognosis if positive, he still has a long way to go. Sparrow cash raised for Brandon will help pay medical expenses, travel costs, and physical therapy as well as the everyday living expenses for this family of 7.
