Aquilla's Story:
(11.18.10) Aquilla is a beautiful and active little girl of 4 year old with lots of energy and playfulness. But, she doesn't have as much energy as she used to and sometimes its hard for her to breath. Aquilla was born at 29 weeks by an emergency C-section. The doctors knew right away that there was a problem with her heart and they began taking care of her immediately after she was born. She spent her first 6 weeks of life in the NICU at Doernbechers where she was diagnosed with a condition call Atrial Septal Defect or a hole in the heart. The size of the hole was borderline in size at the time. That meant that doctors would not perform surgery but would wait in hopes that the hole would close up on its own. Doctors informed Aquilla's mother, Yaro, that if the hole was not closed up the time she was 3, they would have to perform surgery to close it. Unfortunately, the hole has remained in Aquilla's heart. It is causing her to have trouble breathing and makes her more tired then most kids her age. But she still has energy for school where she loves to learn about many things and especially loves to draw and paint. She enjoys dancing both tap and ballet and takes great pride in her coin and marble collections. Surgery has been scheduled for Aquilla so that the hole can be closed. She will be on antibiotics and aspirin to prevent blood clots and will be monitored for at least 6 month after the surgery. Sparrow cash raised will be used for travel expenses to Portland, medical expenses and the drugs needed for ongoing care. Aquilla was born at 29 weeks by an emergency C-section.
