Angel's Story:
(2.1.10)Angel Villa is an adorable, energetic, and lovable little boy who has gone through much in his first two years of life. Little Angel was born on March 13th, 2008 with a tethered spinal cord. There was a mass in his spine, which his spinal cord was attached to. Doctors also quickly learned that Angel had a problem with his Achilles tendon, resulting in a deformed foot. At 3 months of age, Angel had to have surgery on his back in order to remove tissue from his spine. At 6 months of age, Angel had a second surgery, this one involving a tendon transfer to help correct his foot. Because Angel's legs are two different lengths and because he has decreased feeling in the leg that had surgery, doctors said that he might not be able to walk until he was 4 or 5 years old. However, Angel surprised everyone when he started walking in October, 2009, at 19 months old, with the help of a brace. Angel and his family have to travel to Portland every month and a half for checkups on either his leg, his back, or both. Although he currently is doing well, doctors have said that he will most likely need additional back surgeries in the future in order to prevent orthopedic problems. In spite of these hardships, Angel is a cheerful little boy that easily brings a smile to the faces of all who meet him.
