Xamira's Story:
Xamira is a beautiful little girl with dark hair and a contagious smile. According to her mother, she is happy and cheerful despite the challenges she faces every day. She loves to practice taking steps with her mother’s help, doing things with her hands, especially painting, and playing in the water.

Xamira was born by emergency C-section when it was discovered that she was no longer receiving oxygen. By the time doctors delivered her, she had been without oxygen for 30 minutes. Immediately after delivery, she was flown to Portland where she would spend the next 3 weeks of her life. She began having seizures and was placed on medication to keep her sleep and to control the seizures. Doctors did what they could to slow or prevent any further brain damage that might occur.

Doctors told Xamira’s parents that they didn’t know what kind of life their little girl would have. Most likely, she would never be able to eat, walk, talk or see. Only time would tell. After two weeks, doctors slowly reduced her seizure medication and allowed Xamira to wake up. For the first time they were able to see their daughter with her eyes open.

Xamira immediately surprised doctors by learning to breastfeed. It was because of this miracle that she was able to be released to come home. A month later, the family returned to Portland for more tests. Xamira wasn’t growing or meeting the milestones of a child her age. It was determined that Xamira had Cerebral Palsy.

Xamira is a thriving young lady that has done more than doctors ever thought she would. She attends speech therapy to help improve her communication and eating skills as well as physical therapy to help improve her core strength so that one day, she may be able to walk.

Sparrow funds raised for Xamira will help pay for a special walker for her to use so she can began to walk on her own. It will also help pay for ongoing medical and therapy expenses.
