Tristan is a strong, courageous 5-year-old fighter that never stops smiling. On October 30, 2012 Tristan’s parents, Sara and Chris, noticed that something was wrong with their little boy. He looked yellow for some reason, like he was jaundice, but they knew that was not something you would normally see in a 3-year-old. After an exam, doctors found that Tristan’s liver was swollen. They suspected hepatitis and decided to do an ultrasound-finding a large mass on his liver.
Tristan was immediately transported to Doernbecher’s in Portland. Doctors did surgery to perform a biopsy and place a port in Tristan’s chest, allowing doctors to give him medicine more easily. On November 3rd, 2012, his parents finally received the diagnosis, a form of cancer known as Rhabdomyosarcoma. This type of cancer forms masses in soft muscle tissue anywhere in the body. Tristan’s tumor had formed around his liver and was taking up 90% of the left lobe of his chest.
Tristan beat Rhabdomyosarcoma the first time, but unfortunately the cancer has returned. Tristan was re-diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma on November 7th of 2014. The tumor has returned on his liver and had a new mass has developed on the side of Tristan’s face, which has been removed. Tristan has completed radiation, and is now receiving and responding to chemotherapy!
Although Tristan has endured through many tough circumstances, he and his family have hope that he can get through this a second time. Tristan is a polite, generous, calm little boy that has future plans of playing baseball and soccer!
Sparrow Cash raised for Tristan will help with ongoing medical expenses, travel, and everyday living expenses. Students at Tumalo Community School will “earn” Sparrow Cash by completing a minimum of 256 hours of sponsored community service.
