Tristan is just like any other teenager, he does things at his own pace. He is 14 years old, but much smaller than the rest of the kids his age. He was born with Downs Syndrome, which is caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of Chromosome 21. He has lost half of his hearing in both ears and has to wear hearing aids because of that.
Tristan is still non-verbal, although he wants to talk and knows some Sign Language to communicate his wants and needs. He has trouble sequencing sounds to form words. Because of this, Tristan visits speech therapy and occupational therapy, which helps develop, recover, and maintain daily living and work skills for those with a physical, mental or developmental condition.
Part of Tristan’s condition is that he experiences sensory issues. He suffers from anxiety because of sensory overload. Even brushing his teeth can be very painful for Tristan. His parents, Robert and Lorraine, usually have to blend everything for Tristan.
Tristan also has Celiac Disease which means he cannot eat any foods with wheat or gluten in them. He tends to be a "grazer" and doesn't eat very much. He recently had his appendix and gallbladder taken out within the last year, with the gallbladder just taken out three weeks ago!
Although Tristan’s life has been a tough one, he is an independent young man. He enjoys swimming at the Bend Country Club, and riding horses at Healing Reins.
Tristan will be adopted as a Sparrow to Cascade Middle School. Students will work hard to raise money for Tristan through Les Schwab sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
