Tristan's Story:
Tristan is a normal little boy who enjoys playing with his dinosaurs, pushing around his cars and watching “Ferocious Frankie” videos. On October 30, 2012 Tristan’s parents, Sara and Chris, noticed that something was wrong with their little boy. He looked yellow for some reason, like he was jaundice but they knew that was not something you would normally see in a 3 year old. After an exam, doctors found that Tristan’s liver was swollen. They suspected hepatitis and decided to do an ultrasound - finding a large mass on his liver.

Tristan was immediately transported to Doernbecher’s in Portland. Doctors did surgery to perform a biopsy and place a port in Tristan’s chest, allowing doctors to give him medicine more easily. It was the next day, November 2, which his parents finally received the diagnosis, a form of cancer known as Rhabdomyosarcoma. This type of cancer forms masses in soft muscle tissue anywhere in the body. Tristan’s tumor had formed around his liver and was taking up 90% of the left lobe of his chest.

Chemotherapy began immediately in an effort to shrink the tumor before having surgery to remove the tumor. Unfortunately, his liver function has ceased due to the tumor blocking the biliary duct. Because his liver won’t drain properly on its own, doctors cannot give him full chemotherapy. He began receiving only 50% of what would normally be given. Even after chemo, Tristan may eventually need a liver transplant due to the damage that has already been done.

As of the end of November, Tristan is not responding to chemo. Doctors will not perform surgery as they risk spreading the tumor if they were to operate. They are now attempting a 5 day blast of chemo to attempt to shrink the tumor enough for the liver to begin draining properly. His prognosis is uncertain.

Sparrow Cash raised for Tristan will help with ongoing medical expenses, travel, and everyday living expenses. Students at Trinity Lutheran School will “earn” Sparrow Cash donated in memory of J Morris by completing a minimum of 256 hours of community service.
