Six-year-old Theresa is like many other little girls her age. She is full of adventure, loves school and enjoys spending time with her friends. In fact, these days, the only outward sign that her life is very different from other kids her age is on the top of her head. Theresa used to have a head full of beautiful dark hair, but 18 rounds of chemotherapy (over the course of 6 months) caused it to all fall out.
In July of 2014, sweet Theresa was diagnosed with Wilms Tumor, a type of cancer that attacks the kidneys, and most often occurs in children. At the time of diagnosis, Theresa’s Wilms Tumor was found to be in stage 2 and had completely consumed one of her kidneys.
As a result, surgeons removed the diseased kidney, and Theresa began the intense chemotherapy treatment soon after. After successfully completing treatment, Theresa will have her access port removed on January 29th, 2015. Since diagnosis, Theresa has endured three separate surgeries.
Fortunately, Theresa is on the road to recovery. Her cute short hairstyle will soon be replaced with thick dark hair once again. However, although the outward signs of her courageous fight will soon be concealed, Theresa and her family still face years of medical checkups, tests, scans, and medications.
Although this journey has been a difficult one for Theresa and her loving family, she has faced this adversity with a level of strength and courage not usually found in someone so young. Theresa is an inspiration to all those who meet her.
Theresa will be adopted as a Sparrow to her own school, Springville K-8 School in Beaverton. Fellow students will work hard to raise money for Theresa through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
