Sawyer's Story:
(12/7/09) In Oregon, 1 of out every 89 children are affected by autism. Sawyer McPhail is one of them. Sawyer is a cute, lively, energetic, and incredibly loving 4-year-old that, like other kids with autism, is growing up in a world that he doesn't understand. Autism, at its root, is a neurological disorder that impacts development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills. Sawyer, like many kids with autism, also has severe food allergies and sensory issues. Sawyer is on a strict special diet, as many foods cause significant digestive and neurological problems. Although Sawyer experienced a delay in speech, his progress in this area has been amazing. Sawyer receives autism therapy at his pre-school, where he loves to spend time with his teachers and friends. Children with autism need much support and thankfully, Sawyer has this. The future is bright for this special little boy as he lives his daily life impacted by autism. The students at Hedrick Middle School are excited to be adopting Sawyer as their Sparrow for the 2009/2010 school year. Local law firm, Hornecker, Cowling, Hassen & Heysell has generously partnered with Sparrow Clubs, signing on as Hedrick's project sponsor. Students will raise money for Sawyer through community service and fundraising. This money will help Sawyer's family with additional therapy costs, expensive dietary supplements, and basic family expenses.
