Paisley's Story:(3.11.11) At 6 months old, Paisley Simon is a sweet little baby girl with captivating big blue eyes and a curious and happy demeanor. If fact, just by looking at little Paisley, you may never suspect that she had a rough start coming into our world or that she has a potentially life-threatening heart condition called cardiomyopathy. Doctors first noticed an abnormality with Paisley's heart at 35 weeks into her mother Brooke's pregnancy. Shortly after this, tests showed that little Paisley's heart was worse. Her heart was three times the normal size it should be and her valves were severely stretched out, restricting blood from getting to her lungs. Because of this, doctors delivered Paisley via emergency C-section at 37 weeks. For the first several months of her life, Paisley was connected to an oxygen supply and relied on a feeding tube to get proper nutrition. She also had to take five different medications to support her heart function. In spite of her rough start, Paisley is making great progress. She was able to discontinue the oxygen use in November and has recently stopped needing the feeding tube. She is down to two medications and has been successfully maintaining her weight. Paisley sees her pediatrician every week, sees her cardiologists once a month, and has regular ultrasounds on her heart. Because cardiomyopathy is a lifelong disease, doctors have said that only time will tell whether or not Paisley will need surgery in the future. In the meantime, little Paisley continues to be adored by her parents, her many siblings, and everyone else that meets her and learns her story.
