Mikayla's Story:

Mikayla is a bright energetic 12 year old who lives in Middleton Indiana. To those who know and love her, Mikayla is known as an “old Soul”. She is kind, loving, generous, and loves being with friends and family. She loves school and learning new forms of art. Mikayla likes to read, knit, crochet, play the guitar and sing. She loves music and some of her favorite musicians are Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Carrie Underwood. When Mikayla isn’t enjoying crafts or music, she likes volleyball, cross country, bowling, swimming, camping and bonfires. Some of her favorite movies/shows are “Bizarre Foods”; “Myth Busters”; “Ghost Adventures”; “Sound of Music”’; and “Anne of Green Gables” movies. Her favorite foods include chili, steak, tacos, veggies, and fruits. Mikayla has one brother and two sisters.
Mikayla has always been happy and healthy, until last year when her parents received a call that would forever change their lives. On Thanksgiving Day, Mikayla and her family were heading out the door to celebrate the dinner with family when her doctor called. They were instructed to immediately take her to the Emergency Room at the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. She hadn’t been feeling well for weeks and blood tests and a bone marrow biopsy showed why; Mikayla was diagnosed with a blood cancer, Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
Mikayla has been in the hospital for extended periods of time and is fighting for her life. Her mother, Carrie, said “our lives changed forever. Not even for the worse. In a lot of ways, it is better. We love each other more; we turn off the TV and spend more time together; we care more about our neighbors and community, and we are bigger believers that there is a God and how obvious it is.”
Currently, Mikayla has been in remission since completion of round 1. She will be in the hospital for the majority of at least 6 months. She will be heading back to Peyton Manning for round 3 and after that she will head to Riley Hospital for round 4 and a bone marrow transplant. Mikayla feels better now than she did before being diagnosed. She feels great, has a big appetite and lots of energy. She has been very positive throughout this journey. If you ask her about whether or not this has been a rough journey she will tell you no. To her it's been a pretty easy process and for the most part has felt really well.

Funds raised by Sparrow Club will go to medical bills.
