Michael's Story:
(4/1/08) Michael is an active, athletic 12-year-old boy who was diagnosed with ALL lymphocytic leukemia on February 5, 2008. Since being diagnosed, Michael has endured lumbar punctures, bone marrow draws, and blood transfusions, and had a port installed in his chest in order to receive chemotherapy. He has spent time at Doernbecher's Children's Hospital in Portland but is able to receive his next wave of chemotherapy in Southern Oregon. Michael's treatment will continue for at least the next three years, in which he and his family will make several trips to Portland to see specialists. Due to his diagnosis, Michael has been unable to attend school since February and greatly misses his many friends and teachers. For now, he has also had to stop playing sports (his favorites are baseball, basketball, and football) but Michael is determined to beat this disease and return to doing the things he loves. Michael's school, Ashland Middle School, has enthusiastically asked to adopt Michael as their Sparrow. Once adopted, students at AMS will support their classmate by raising money by completing hours of community service on his behalf. Money raised will help Michael's family with travel costs to Portland and will help with general living expenses during this difficult time.
