Adorable Madelen is a sweet and petite 2-year-old little girl who was born with a rare congenital malformation syndrome called “septo optic dysplasia.” This condition results in small, underdeveloped optic nerves as well as a small and underdeveloped pituitary gland. Because of this, Madelen’s vision and her overall growth are affected. Madelen is near sighted enough to be determined legally blind and she is expected to need eye surgery in the future, most likely around four years of age.
Because her pituitary gland is small and not where it should be, Madelen has started growth hormone treatment in hopes of it jumpstarting her growth. She receives a shot every night, seven days a week (in either her leg, stomach, or buttocks) and will continue needing this shot until her growth plate stops growing. These shots are very expensive and insurance may not cover cost for the full length of treatment.
Madelen’s medical condition has also resulted in some delayed development, so she receives several forms of therapy, including occupational, physical, speech, and feeding therapy.
Despite her smaller size, Madelen has a big personality! While very sweet, she is also a very active and independent child who loves music, lights, swings, and being outside. Madelen instantly warms the hearts of those who meet her.
Madelen will be adopted as a Sparrow to St. Mary’s School in Medford. Students at St. Mary’s will work hard to raise money for Madelen through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
