Maddison's Story:(10.15.10) Maddison was born a healthy, bouncing baby girl on January 31 of 2006. It wasn't until 9 months later, when her parents noticed that she wasn't doing the things that most babies her age do, that they discovered something was wrong. Why wasn't she sitting, rolling over or crawling? Her parents decided to take her to a doctor to try to find out why. Tests were performed and Maddison was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. With this diagnosis came some uncertainty. How bad was the disability and what kinds of help would she need? Maddison underwent more tests and scans to determine the type and severity of her disability. She was labeled a "spastic paraplegic" since only the lower half of her body was affected. While no disability is easy, the family was glad to learn that her upper body and brain were not affected. Maddison has physical therapy often to help her strengthen her lower body muscles. She has to have casts on her lower legs and feet every few months in an attempt to stretch the muscles and help her walk. Maddison just underwent surgery in June to cut the various muscles in her legs to, once again, try to get her feet to lie flat. Maddison's battles are not over. She will endure many more surgeries over the months and years to come as well as hip replacements at some point to replace her every weakening hips. Sparrow cash raised for Maddison and her family will help pay for ongoing medical expenses, travel expenses to Portland, as well as improvements to the family's home to accommodate Maddison better.
