Lydia's Story:
At only a week and a half old, Lydia failed her first hearing test. At two months old she failed it again. Her parents also started to notice her left eye had a white spot on it in pictures and her dad noticed that the eye looked lazy. Tests soon revealed the reason for this. At five months old, Lydia was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a cancer that starts in the retina. Her left eye was not only blind but had a tumor behind it. Her other eye only has peripheral vision. At first they tried laser eye surgery, but the tumor kept growing so they had to start her on chemotherapy treatment as well.

Every month (for the next 5 years) Lydia travels with her family to Casey Eye Institute and Doernbecher in Portland for these laser and chemo eye treatments. The chemo is causing her more hearing loss. While things are stable now, doctors say that Lydia may need to eventually have her left eye removed.

Although Lydia’s young life has been a difficult one, she is such a happy baby. She loves her three older siblings (triplets) and they adore her as well.

Lydia will be adopted as a Sparrow to Hedrick Middle School in Medford. Students will work hard to raise money for Lydia through community service and fundraising projects
