Nine-year-old Lucas, or “Luke” as his friends and family call him, is an intelligent and affectionate third grader who enjoys the music of Taylor Swift and has a great sense of humor.
Luke is loved by his fellow students and is like them in many ways, although physically, he is quite different. Luke was born with damage to his brain, resulting in a diagnosis of cerebral palsy at 6 months of age. Luke has no cognitive damage but to this day, lives with quadriplegia cerebral palsy, which means that all four of his limbs are affected. This causes many stresses on the body and early on in his life, doctors didn’t know if Luke would ever walk, talk, or feed himself. Today, doctors call Luke a “miracle,” due to how much progress he has been able to make.
Luke can use his legs more than his arms and actually has extreme control with his left heel, which he uses to type with, along with many other things. Luke spends many hours each week in various therapies, including physical, occupational, speech, and feeding therapy. Luke talks as much as possible, but because of a speech disability, he uses technology to help him communicate and write.
Luke and his story are an inspiration to all who have the opportunity to meet him. He is truly changing people’s perspectives in regard to living with cerebral palsy.
Luke will be adopted as a Sparrow to his own school, Bellview Elementary, in Ashland. Bellview students will work hard to raise money for Luke through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
Funds raised by students will be used to help purchase an Eye Gaze System, which will allow Luke to communicate and write on a computer using his eyes.
