From the moment you first meet 3-year-old Logan, (he turns 4 on October 26th), you know that you will never quite be the same. Logan immediately captures your attention with his excitable and talkative personality and captures your heart with his big blue eyes, contagious laugh, and incredible smile.
Little Logan seems to radiate joy in spite of living life with a serious medical condition. Logan has spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which is a neuromuscular disease that causes muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy). Logan cannot walk, crawl, or dress himself without assistance. SMA is a degenerative disease, which means that it progresses as time goes on, and will eventually affect feeding, swallowing, and respiratory function. However, SMA only affects Logan’s muscles and has no effect on his cognitive function.
Logan has a brilliant mind and loves to read and learn and is fascinated with robots, dinosaurs, and monster trucks. He is also very adept at controlling his motorized wheelchair, which he uses to get to where he wants to go.
Logan and his family travel to Portland at least four times a year for appointments at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and Shriners Hospital. In addition, Logan has physical and occupational therapy twice a week, along with frequent swimming therapy.
Logan will be adopted as a Sparrow to Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. Students will work hard to raise money for Logan through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
