When Lila’s mom was pregnant with her she tested positive for high levels of protein. This meant there was a chance her daughter could be born with a congenital disorder called Spina Bifida. When little Lila was welcomed into this world, her parent’s fears were confirmed. Lila had a mass at the end of her spine called a lipoma, which her spinal cord was tethered to. This mass was putting pressure on her left leg causing it to be weaker than the right. At only six months old, Lila had surgery to release her spinal cord. The surgery was successful but doctors still feared Lila wouldn’t be able to walk. To the surprise of her doctors at 25 months old, Lila took her first steps.
Lila’s condition has also resulted in a neurogenic bladder (meaning it’s constantly contracting). As a result, she must be catheterized five times a day.
Lila’s family must travel to Portland every six months for tests and will continue to do so until she’s fully grown. Lila also has physical therapy every week to help strengthen her legs. Right now she’s working on learning to jump but her ultimate goal is to dance.
Lila is a beautiful, full of life two year old who adores her big sister Madison and little brother Carson. She’s a very “girly girl” who likes princesses, Disney, and everything pink!
Lila will be adopted as a Sparrow to Logos Public Charter School. Students will work hard to raise money for Lila through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
