Jose "Junior"'s Story:
Jr. was 2 years old when he was taken to the hospital for bleeding gums, which was thought to be from baby bottle tooth decay. After a few days of being horribly sick and very weak, his parents took him back to the doctor. Junior needed an emergency blood transfusion and a bone marrow biopsy. He was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia on October 7, 2011. Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the blood and bone marrow — the spongy tissue inside bones where blood cells are made. It is the most common form of childhood Leukemia.
Jr. is a tough little fighter who undergoes chemotherapy, takes prescription steroids and sees the doctor regularly to check on his progress. Lately he has been making steady progress! Junior no longer needs a feeding tube and he is keeping his weight up which is great news! He also recently started pre-school!
Jr. is a happy, hyper, caring and curious little boy! He loves sports, especially ones with balls like baseball, basketball and football. He has a great time playing with his siblings and his puppy! As for food, he loves eating hamburgers. Junior actually likes going to the hospital because he can interact with people and he knows he will get better. However, he also doesn’t like the hospital because it can be scary.
Jr.’s mom is a grad of Tigard High School. His parents are looking forward to seeing what Tigard High students will do. They are already impressed at the enthusiasm THS has shown for Jr. and are glad to see students taking an interest. The money that THS students raise will go towards medical bills for Jr.'s doctor visits and chemotherapy. Jr. and his family thank you! Their gratitude is not something that can be expressed with words.
