Joel's Story:12.08.08) Joel is a beautiful, happy, curly-haired one year old who is just learning to walk. He has DiGeorge Syndrome, which is a congenital genetic disorder with varying conditions present in each individual with the syndrome. Joel had part of his colon removed and gets most of his nourishment through a feeding tube. He has GERD and eating problems associated with his problems. He must be monitored constantly. He has another IV line for his many medications. He has several other problems, which may require future operations. He may have delayed speech, so his mom is starting to teach him sign language. He is very susceptible to infection and whenever he gets a fever, he has to be hospitalized. As you can imagine, his mom has to miss a lot of work to care for him. However, Joel is a happy little guy and he is exceeding all the doctor's expectations. He loves toddling around with his little backpack that holds his feeding regulator. He likes playing ball and sitting in his activity center and watching 'Bob the Builder' and 'Curious George'. He loves animals--dogs in particular--and he loves music.
