Hazel's Story:
(2.10.10) Hazel Finley is a precious 22 month-old little girl. With her curly, brown hair and quick smile, she is a delight to all who meet her. Her two sister, Scarlett and Georgia, play her favorite game, hide-and-seek, with her and are a constant source of entertainment. Hazel was born with Pulmonary Stenosis and Atrial Septal Defect. Pulmonary Stenosis is a congenital (present at birth) defect in which the muscle tissue of her pulmonary valve hardens, causing it to narrow, thus making her heart work too hard. Atrial Septal Defect is a congenital heart defect in which the wall that separates the upper heart chambers does not close completely, leaving a hole in the heart. Because of these issues, Hazel was developmentally behind in the milestones babies go through. Hazel needed to have a heart procedure to fix the pulmonary valve so her heart could work properly. Since the procedure, she has become much for active and has grown immensely, both physically and mentally. Recently the family found out the hole in her heart from the Atrial Septal Defect has healed itself. Hazel works with an occupational therapist who is helping her to "catch up". She also works with a speech therapist and is becoming much more verbal. Hazel is doing remarkably well and we at Kellogg Middle School are honored to get to help the sweet little miracle that Hazel is.
