Hayden's Story:

Sweet Hayden was born a beautiful and perfectly healthy 7lb, 14oz baby boy on March 26, 2013. Just two months later, little Hayden almost died after becoming a victim of severe physical child abuse at the hands of his biological father.

Hayden, his body seemingly lifeless, was rushed to the hospital and then flown to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland, where he was described as “too broken to touch.” Hayden’s right leg was fractured, as was the femur bone in his left leg. His left hip was dislocated and he had multiple fractured ribs. Doctors determined that he had been strangled more than once. Hayden also was suffering from hemorrhages in his brain, as well as in his retinas, which resulted in temporary blindness.

Miraculously, Hayden survived, but his life today is much different as a result. Hayden has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, epilepsy, vision loss, and developmental delays. He currently does not crawl, sit up, or walk on his own, but he does have a wheelchair. He also does not communicate yet, although he is able to show affection in his own ways. Hayden receives intense physical and occupational therapy on a regular basis, but insurance only covers 24 sessions per year and the state does not provide enough additional therapy for Hayden to make progress.

However, Megan, Hayden’s mother, is determined to continue being the best advocate for Hayden that she can be. Although extremely difficult to talk about, Megan is committed to sharing Hayden’s story in order to spread much needed awareness of the reality of child abuse.

Hayden will be adopted as a Sparrow to South Medford High School. Students at SMHS will work hard to make a difference in Hayden’s life through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
