Dom's Story:(12.9.11) Dominque was an active young man who enjoyed spending his days riding his bike and playing his video games. But when he woke up one morning with a mouth full of blood, his parents, Seth and April, knew that something was wrong. Dom was rushed to the ER in Redmond where doctors immediately began running tests. Within two hours time, he was at Doernbecher's Children's Hospital in Portland. With the excessive bleeding and the bruising on his legs, doctors were immediately able to determine that Dominque had leukemia. Because his platelet counts were so low, doctors had to wait for a couple of days for his counts to rise before doing a bone marrow biopsy. Once that was done on October 12, the family received the official diagnosis, APML Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. Immediately Dom began what will be a 2-year treatment plan. He started with 5 weeks of inpatient treatment at Doernbecher's where he received chemo and spinal taps to put chemo directly in his spine and brain. He was finally able to come home briefly in November before heading back up for his next 5 weeks that began the beginning of December. There will be many more rounds of chemo, bone marrow biopsies and spinal taps yet to come for Dominque. In the meantime, he is doing as well as can be expected. He is still an average 9-year old boy who loves to play with his trucks and cars and has a deep interest in trains. His prognosis is good and his family is hopeful that everything will turn out fine in the end. Sparrow Cash raised for Dominque will be used to pay for ongoing medical expenses, gas and travel expenses for the many trips to Portland.
