Christopher (also known as “Chris” or
“C Dubb” by friends and family), is a happy and sweet 4-year-old boy who lives with a congenital heart defect known as HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome), a defect that before 1982, was 100% fatal.
Christopher became very sick just 24 hours after he was born. All of the structures on the left side of Christopher’s heart (the left side of the heart is responsible for pumping blood to the body) were all underdeveloped. As a result, his liver and other organs were shutting down. Little Christopher endured his first open-heart surgery when he was just one week old. His little chest was kept open for five days and he spent several weeks in the hospital recovering. A pacemaker was added as well. Christopher endured a second open-heart surgery just 5 months later on July 13, 2010.
This past October (2014), Christopher underwent yet another open-heart surgery, bringing the number to three. All together, since birth, Christopher has had five surgeries (3 open-heart) and two procedures (cardiac catheterizations and coils to prevent run away blood vessels from developing). As Christopher grows, more procedures, and likely more surgeries, will be needed to keep his heart functioning the way it needs to.
Even in the face of these challenges, Christopher loves life! Like most boys his age, he likes cars, action figures, Legos, and Power Rangers. He also very much enjoys the outdoors and loves to go fishing and crabbing with his family.
Christopher will be adopted as a Sparrow to Parkrose Middle School in Portland. Students will work hard to raise money for Christopher through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
