Blake's Story:

Blake is a handsome and active little 4-year-old cowboy at heart. On September 15, 2015, Blake was in a life-threatening horse accident. While enjoying the afternoon at the barn, playing like he did every day, he was kicked on the left side of his head by a nearby horse.

Blake was immediately flown from Molalla to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland. Blake had extreme damage to his skull and swelling in his brain was increasing very rapidly. In addition, Blake was suffering from a fractured cheek and jawbone. Blake was rushed to surgery where surgeons ended up removing almost half of the left side of his skull so that his brain would have the room that it needed to accommodate the swelling.

Miraculously, Blake survived and was able to go home with his family on September 25th in hopes of being able to continue his very long road to recovery in a more comfortable environment. Although he gets tired easily and is still a little wobbly while walking, Blake is back on his feet and has even been able to go outside and play with his brother for short periods of time.

Blake will need to endure another big surgery so that surgeons can replace the pieces of skull that had to be removed. In the meantime, Blake has to wear a special helmet in order to protect his head.

It may be some time before Blake’s family knows the full extent of his injuries and regular physical therapy will most likely become a normal part of Blake’s life for the foreseeable future. However, this little cowboy is as tough as they come and his fight against the odds continues to inspire everyone who learns of his story.

Blake will be adopted as a Sparrow to Oregon City High School. OCHS students will work hard to make a difference in Blake’s life through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
