Benjamin's Story:(2.21.11) Eighteen years ago, Benjamin Matlock was born with the most severe case of cleft palate that doctors had ever seen in the Pacific Northwest. Beginning when he was only 2 months of age, Benjamin has endured eight surgeries to correct his cleft palate, with a final bone graft still remaining. During these surgeries, doctors have had to construct the entire roof of Ben's mouth, along with his nasal passages, and Benjamin was the first patient at Shriners Hospital to be treated with a wooden splint in his mouth. Unfortunately, during one of these surgeries, Benjamin developed a respiratory issue, which caused oxygen to be cut off to his brain. As a result, Benjamin suffered a degree of brain damage, which affects him in different ways to this day. Throughout his life, Benjamin has learned to overcome these hardships and has proven that he is the kind of person who will enjoy life despite his struggles. However, in August of 2010, Benjamin began a new fight when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Since his diagnosis, Benjamin has undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments and is possibly facing more of the same in the future, along with years of follow up medical appointments.
