Bauer's Story:Precious baby Bauer was born on June 8th, 2012. Later that very night, doctors discovered that something was wrong as tests revealed very low blood sugar, along with other alarming indicators, such as a bluish skin color. Further tests were done leading doctors to diagnose little Bauer with a rare congenital heart defect called “tetralogy of Fallot,” which involves four anatomical abnormalities.
Bauer has a hole in his heart (between the right and left ventricles) and his pulmonary artery, which connects the heart and lungs, is significantly narrow. These two abnormalities, along with two others, cause low oxygen in the blood, which can quickly become life threatening. Therefore, doctors will perform open-heart surgery on Bauer near the end of September or early October of 2012. As Bauer grows, there may be a need for future heart valve replacement surgery.
Chromosomal abnormalities often are common among children with tetralogy of Fallot, and tests have revealed that little Bauer has a very rare abnormality called 6P terminal microdeletion. The long-term implications of this are unknown, as (since 2005) only 30 people are known worldwide to have this abnormality.
Hearing and vision issues are a possibility, so Bauer will have regular testing done in these areas, along with ongoing observation for a possible kidney abnormality.
With his adorable little smile and his full head of thick curly hair, Bauer is adored by all who know him. This is especially true when it comes to Bella, his two and a half year old big sister.
Bauer will be adopted as a Sparrow to St. Mary’s School. Students will work hard to raise money for Bauer through community service and fundraising projects. Funds raised for Bauer will help cover frequent medical travel expenses, and will help offset the cost of co-pays for numerous medical appointments. In addition, funds will be used to help with general living expenses as needs arise during this difficult time.
