Ashley's Story:(4/15/08) Ashley is a beautiful, energetic, and athletic 12-year-old. In 2005, Ashley was diagnosed with ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura), which is a disease that causes very low blood platelet counts. A healthy person has between 150,000 400,000 plateletsAshley has a count of 21,000. This condition can result in excessive bruising and bleeding, as a low platelet count does not allow blood to clot properly. Ashley loves to play soccer and ride horses, but these activities are too dangerous when her platelet counts are so low. Ashley also has severe joint pain, which has caused doctors to suspect lupus. She has regular blood draws, infusions, prednisone treatments, and is currently on three different medications, which will hopefully prevent her from having to have her spleen removed. Sparrow cash that is raised will help with medical bills, travel expenses to appointments, and will also help with basic family needs.
