Alex's Story:
When Alex turned 11 years old on February 23rd, 2013, life as he and his family knew it was great. But just two months later, life for Alex and his family would look completely different. On April 15, 2013, Alex got up for school and suffered a grand mal seizure. This was especially alarming considering that Alex had no previous history of medical issues or indication of illness. Alex was rushed to the ER, where scans revealed the unthinkable…a large mass in his brain. In May, doctors confirmed that his mass was a grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma... an aggressive brain cancer.

Since diagnosis, Alex has had four deep brain surgeries, all within one month. Surgeons tried to remove 100% of the tumor but found that it had spread too deeply into surrounding tissues. In addition to multiple brain surgeries, Alex has received a lifetime dose of radiation (33 treatments) and extensive chemotherapy treatments, which continue to this day. His condition has also resulted in the loss of his left-sided peripheral vision, which doctors said would greatly decrease Alex’s chances of being able to continue doing what he loves most…playing sports.

However, Alex has proved this prediction wrong. Alex is an avid cyclist and continues to ride and race his bike in spite of his condition (last year he was ranked 4th overall in Oregon for his division). He also continues to ski and he even surfs when he has the chance.

Alex is a young man who is clearly full of life with a smile and a personality that penetrates the hearts of all who have the privilege of meeting him. He is a living example of perseverance through adversity and is an inspiration to his family, friends, and community. You can follow Alex’s story and battle through his facebook page, “Team Alex.”

Ashland Middle School, the school that he attends, will adopt Alex as a Sparrow. His own peers will work hard to raise money for Alex through community service and fundraising projects. Funds raised for Alex will help cover frequent travel expenses, uncovered medical expenses, as well as general expenses during this difficult time.
