Addison's Story:
If the term “Arteriovenous Malformations” is unfamiliar to you, you are not alone. After all, this rare and unique medical condition is experienced by less than 1% of the American population.

Arteriovenous malformations (or AVMs) are abnormal connections between veins and arteries. AVMs result in a tangle of blood vessels void of necessary capillaries. Without capillaries, there are abnormally direct connections between high-pressure arteries and low-pressure veins. Although AVMs can appear in any location throughout the body, they are often associated with the brain and spinal cord.

Addison (Addi for short), a sweet, lively, redheaded 5-year-old girl, has three AVMs in the left lobe of her brain. In Addi’s case, the AVMs are so severe that every day carries with it the risk of dangerous brain bleeds, which could possibly result in seizures, stroke, or worse.

Addi and her family have to frequently travel to Portland for tests and procedures. In August 2012, Addi underwent a very long and extensive surgery to remove two of the three AVMs from her brain. The surgery was successful. However, the third AVM is too deep within her brain to operate on. Because of this, Addi will continue to have tests and medical trips for years to come and additional surgeries and procedures in the future are possible.

Apart from her medical condition, Addi is a happy, bright girly-girl. She loves all things Disney (especially Disney princesses), watching girly movies, and playing dress up, but she also likes to get outdoors and play sports like soccer. She gets excited about school and loves being around her two brothers…most of the time.

Addi will be adopted as a Sparrow to the Crater Academy of Health & Public Service (CAHPS). Students will work hard to raise money for Addi through community service and fundraising projects. Funds raised for Addi will help cover frequent travel expenses, and will greatly help with general living expenses during this time of need.
