Aaliyah's Story:Aaliyah is a beautiful and sweet 7-year-old who loves to dance, bake, and wear high heels and make-up. However, this past year, life has changed dramatically for Aaliyah and her family.
Early in 2013, Aaliyah started getting severe headaches, one that lasted two entire days. Tests were done and on March 4th, 2013, Aaliyah was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Scans showed the baseball-sized tumor sitting at the base of her brain stem connected to her spine.
Since being diagnosed, Aaliyah has endured eight surgeries, three of which were brain surgery. After her second brain surgery, Aaliyah lost all of her motor skills and has had to work hard in physical therapy to relearn how to walk and talk. Unfortunately, because of where it is located, surgeons have been able to remove only 70% of the tumor.
Aaliyah is currently on an extensive chemotherapy and radiation treatment plan. She has already received several rounds of chemotherapy and over six weeks of radiation. As a result, she often is in the hospital for weeks at a time. The many medications she must take on a daily basis often make her nauseous and sleepy.
Even in the midst of all of this, Aaliyah continues to courageously fight and in doing so, is an inspiration to all who meet her. Not even cancer has been able to diminish the power of her beautiful smile.
Aaliyah will be adopted as a Sparrow to Forest Grove High School, in Forest Grove, OR. Forest Grove students will work hard to raise money for Aaliyah through sponsored community service and fundraising projects.
Funds raised by students will be used to help Aaliyah and her family with whatever they need to get through this difficult and challenging time.
