What you can expect from a Sparrow Project?

We understand that this can be a difficult time for you and your family. The founder of Sparrow Clubs has been there himself, with his own son and family. We respect your unique situation, and although we are not able the answer to all of your medically related financial challenges, we believe you will be blessed in many practical and inspirational ways by kids who get involved to help your child.

  • After we have received your signed application, a Sparrow Clubs USA staff member or volunteer will contact you before your child is adopted as a Sparrow Project, We would also like tto better understand the situation that you are in and hopefully meet you and your child.
  • If your child is "adopted" as a Sparrow, you will be given a copy of the “Family Handbook” to keep, and will have the opportunity to learn more about Sparrow Clubs and to help answer other questions that you might have.
  • We will kindly request about 12 to 15 photos of your child and family. All of these photos will be scanned onto our computer and returned to you by mail soon after. One of these photos will be posted on our website along with the Sparrow's “profile.” This profile highlights what medical condition your child has, what his / her personality is like, including his / her hobbies, likes, dislikes and the needs this p[roject will help meet for your family. The photos will also be used to make a short DVD video of your child, which we use to initially introduce your child to the school Sparrow Club.
  • On the money side, if your sparrow project is sponsored by a local business or organization, you can expect a minimum of $2,560 in financial assistance. If the project is self-sponsored by a club (or un-sponsored) the amount could be less. This money is ‘earned’ by the kids in the Club, who do community service projects on behalf of your child. For each hour that they ‘work,’ they can earn $10 from that seed money, which is transferred into your child’s Sparrow account.
  • When your Sparrow Club completes their community service hours, they have the option of continuing on and doing fundraising for their Sparrow. Much of the fundraising efforts depend on the nature of your child's condition and your family's financial need and how it impacts the Club and the community. Please be patient and realize that every Sparrow Club has its own culture. It is really a “kid-driven” project and it may take them time to put their ideas together, brainstorm, agree on what to do, then perform their service or fundraising and show us their results. Some Clubs get started right away, and results are seen quickly. Others are slower but may end up having consistent, fruitful events throughout an entire school year. Sparrow Projects really take on a life of their own. We cannot predict or promise who in your community will be moved to support the kid's cause and if or how much help a specific Sparrow will ultimately receive.
  • We hope that, at least once, you and your child can visit with the kids in the Sparrow Club. Obviously this will depend on whether your child is able to do this or not, however, we strongly encourage a meeting to take place as it is at this point that the kids in the club are motivated and mobilized to help their Sparrow. This gives the kids an opportunity to better to ask questions about his/her medical condition, and to get to know their Sparrow as a real person. Time and time again, we see compassion and kindness ignite in these kids hearts, which in turn propels them to do all they can to help their Sparrow. This meeting may take place at an all-school assembly (with your consent), however, we cannot take responsibility for information that might be misinterpreted by young children.
  • Each Sparrow Project lasts for ONE year only. Sparrow Clubs can only adopt your child to a club and find a sponsor for that club ONE time. This is due to the fact that we have many applications from Sparrow families pending, and we want to be fair to each family that submits an application to our organization. Some clubs, however, like to remain in contact with their Sparrow even when the Sparrow Project has been officially closed and may even continue to fundraise on their behalf. This is an arrangement that can be made and agreed upon by your family and the Club, should the situation arise.
  • Finally, we believe that “Once a Sparrow, always a Sparrow.” Our Sparrow kids and families are always special to Sparrow Clubs. We encourage and invite your support as volunteers, spokespersons and mentors to other families.
