Sparrow Clubs announces the third annual Fly-Fishing & Golf Derby to benefit Sparrow Clubs USA, a national non-profit organization of school-based clubs that assist children in medical crisis. The golf and fly-fishing derby will begin Friday, April 18 with a silent auction and dinner hosted by Aspen Lakes Lodge at Brand 33.
The event will continue on Saturday, April 19 at the private lake of Alder Creek Ranch located just east of Sisters with a dinner awards ceremony at Rock Springs Guest Ranch that evening. Followed by Sunday, April 20 Aspen Lakes Golf Course will host an 18-hole Golf Scramble Tournament on the W.L. Overdorf course.
In the spirit of celebrating two of Central Oregon’s greatest recreational opportunities, there will be a pre-event fly-fishing clinic hosted by world renowned fly fisherman, Denny Rickards at Alder Creek Ranch.
Sparrow Clubs was founded in 1995, by teacher Jeff Leeland after one of his junior high students opened his heart and emptied his bank account to help fund the life-saving bone marrow transplant that Leeland’s son, Michael, needed. Sparrow Clubs promotes Sparrow Projects, a unique service-learning activity where a local child in medical crisis is paired with a school and/or a group of young people who "adopt" him or her as their "Sparrow".
Through project sponsorship and Sparrow Club’s service voucher system, students are inspired to partake in community service as a way to raise funds to meet the urgent needs of their child. Sparrow Clubs has helped more than 350 children nationwide and raised more than $1.5 million for medical treatment. The derby is open to the public with an entry fee of $1,750 per person.
