How Community Service Vouchers Work

Sparrow Clubs give young people the opportunity to serve their community with a heartfelt purpose. With our service voucher program, students don't go out "begging" for money for their Sparrow. They are initially challenged to do a minimum of 256 hours of community service to earn a  pledge from their sponsor.

Students are credited up to $10 per hour* for volunteer work done on their Sparrow’s behalf. Although it’s important to us, the money we raise and give to Sparrow family's is not our only priority. We want every Sparrow Project to promote a sense of "sanctuary" in the school-- especially for youth who need a caring environment at school and among their peers.

* The Service Voucher reimbursement rate may be less than $10 per hour for participants.

Each participating student is given a Service Voucher called a Sparrow Check (see above example). The Sparrow Check identifies:

  • adopted Sparrow (name and picture).
  • major business sponsor (name or logo), if there is one.
  • name of the participating club member / student.
  • list of community service projects, hours served and dollars credited.
  • signature of a parent and/or advisor that validates the service vouchers.

The backs of the Sparrow Checks provide space for the students to validate their efforts and to write a note to their sparrow family. The kids must fill in, "What helping (sparrow's name) has meant to me." These Sparrow Checks are eventually returned to the families who often treasure the short reflections more than the money they've been given.

When the club members complete their service and the Sparrow Checks (vouchers), they are forwarded to our home office. When the vouchers are received and 256 service hours are documented on behalf of the Sparrow, the sponsor's  pledge is transferred into his/her designated fund.

Students can also fundraise for their adopted sparrow as well. Up to 100% of any additional funds raised in the project may also be allocated to that child’s Sparrow Cash account as well. However, use of these funds is determined by Sparrow Clubs USA Board of Directors and may be subject to reallocation for other program needs.
